Doctors warn against weight loss drug

The Medical Association of Australia is concerned that some patients may be a popular weight loss medication over the Internet for seeking restrictions on imported goods in Australia were.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has warned prescribers Reductil, because it could be fatal for patients with heart disease or hypertension.

Dr Brian Morton said the AMA, that people should take care to buy the product range.

"We have to see what is right, what to do and needs the supervision of medicines, he said.

"You have to appropriate patients for him and one of the principles of medical treatment you choose does not hurt."

Dr Morton says there are doubts whether the drugs purchased online are safe.

"It is feared that drugs purchased over the Internet is not really the real McCoy," he said.

"The WHO [World Health] estimates that 30 percent of the medicines purchased online are fake, so I do not know what is there. Is it a harmless drug?"

Stevenson, Jennifer Abbott, the company that Reductil, said no new warnings on the drug.

She said the TGA informed Abbott and disclosure of information to doctors in December to inform them of additional information on the drugs.

"Information and leader of the GP as the patient population is insured, what the proper use, so that no new warnings that any new restrictions or something like that," he said.

"It is fair to say that it is not an update of PI [Product], should we once again that people and people using Meridia Reductil stress may be required.

Mrs Stevenson said that people should not try to buy drugs on the Internet.

"This treatment must be prescribed by a doctor. I think it's important to have given a prescription by a doctor. It is a prescription drug."
